Compositional Awareness

As I travel along this creative and photographic journey, I’m finding great wisdom as I go. Here’s one bit of wisdom I want to pass along - being so keenly aware of our surroundings, that we’re able to “see the art” wherever we may be. Sometimes it comes in a passing glance toward something on the street. Maybe the way a couple interacts - a normal situation, but you notice something different. Maybe it’s a pattern or an odd union of things or even a shadow that creates an interesting composition.

Recognition of an Order

A really interesting aspect of these two photographs (below) is the span of time between them. Captured 10 years apart, I’m realizing how there can be a compositional theme - a recognition of an order, or color, that has taken residence within our psyche and can continue to appear throughout our creative lives. My intention was not necessarily to capture the reds and yellows of both images ... but there was something about them both, that drew me in.

“Sole Mates”

This is one of my favorite photos and a great example of seeing a composition. I was lazily sitting by the pool and after a moment watching the others passing by, my eyes rested upon this. I love both the random and ordered aspects of it all. The common color yet differences in laces, knots and shapes.

What now?

Get outside, take some time to soak in your surroundings, find the art in the ordinary … and have a bunch of fun doing it!
